The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill allowing doubling of wage ceiling for calculating bonus to Rs 7,000 per month for factory workers with establishments with 20 or more workers, with the benefits being applicable retrospectively from April 2014.

New Delhi: Short circuit, poor maintenance and lack of awareness are major reasons of fire in trains,
according to the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

Besides the audit report found that the automatic smoke/fire detection device in the running trains are not successfully implemented.
He said there were three centrally-run mental health institutes, 40 state-run medical hospitals and 398 departments of psychiatry in various medical colleges (183 in government and 215 in private) across the country to treat patients suffering from mental illnesses, including schizophrenia both in urban and rural areas.

Japan is expected to win the right to construct India's first bullet train, after losing an Indonesian high-speed rail deal to China, the Nikkei business daily reported on Tuesday.

Japan will offer more than 1 trillion yen ($8.11 billion) in loans to construct India's Rs 98,000 crore fast train, according to the report.

NEW DELHI: Siemens Limited has bagged an order worth Rs 377 crore from Indian Railways' Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi for supply of traction motors.
Three PPP projects worth Rs 3016 crore are being executed through the annuity route and in-principle approval has been accorded to six others worth Rs 3078 crore.

Panaji: Railway minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off by remote the Mumbai-Margao-Mumbai 1,000 passenger capacity double decker express train on Sunday from the Kala Academy in Panaji. On Indian Railways trains, cases of rape, robbery, kidnapping and theft have increased in 2014 as compared to the previous year, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha informed the Lok Sabha.
The Ministry of Railways has rolled out a slew of austerity measures, including a ban on creation on new posts and curbs on foreign travel, hospitality and entertainment. Besides a drastic cut on the use of telephones and internet, the cost-control measures call for reviewing operation of trains with less than 50 per cent occupancy and closure of services in uneconomic branch lines. The move to tighten the belt comes ahead of the implementation of the 7{+t}{+h}Central Pay Commission with effect from January 1, 2016.

New Delhi: India is expected to spend a whopping $95 billion (over Rs 6.34 lakh crore) on ramping up its rail infrastructure, a step that will help in increasing the country's manufacturing competitiveness, a report says.

NEW DELHI: Trade unions, including the RSS-affiliate Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, have slammed the Seventh Pay Commission report, saying the rise in minimum wages does not match inflation over the last 10 years and that the real overall increase in pay was much less than what was proposed.
The Indian Railways' target of doubling of 12,000 kms of existing corridors in the next 5 years, has been termed as "aggressive" by the transport advisor, who also said that more than 300 projects are still pending with it due to lack of resources and other constraints.
In line with the budget commitment made by Indian Railways towards installation of solar plants as part of its 'Solar Mission' to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, the transporter has come out with a policy on solar capacity panels on rooftops of railway stations.
This will save Indian Railways Rs 1,000 crore annually on its energy bill

When the 39-year-old woman Loco Pilot cranked the nearly 120-tonne diesel locomotive to haul an empty freight train from Vriddhachalam to Ariyalur, it was the first time in Southern Railway history that an “all women crew” headed by her executed the task.

This habit of the class IV boy from Avaregere village in Davanagere saved the life of around 850 passengers on March 15, this year as he noticed a nearly two-inch crack on the rail and stopped a passenger train by waving his red T-shirt.

COIMBATORE: The railways has some bittersweet news for passengers. While it doubled ticket cancellation charges, it reduced the deadline to cancel waitlisted and reservation against cancellation (RAC) tickets to half an hour prior to departure of the train. NEW DELHI: Railways is considering to float green bonds, a first of its kind by the public transporter, to fund its clean energy projects. We may look at issuing green bonds in order to fund clean energy and energy efficiency focused initiatives in railways, said a senior Railway Ministry official.
Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said that the official notification for the ‘One Rank, One Pension’ (OROP) scheme will be issued before Diwali even as armed forces veterans staging a protest to press their demand of the scheme said that they will return their medals across the country on November 9-10.

MUMBAI: A teenager from Kanjurmarg, succumbed to the burn injuries he sustained due to electrocution, while trying to click a selfie, on the rooftop of a train, parked at the car shed near Nahur station.
CHENNAI: Engineers working at Basin Bridge Train Care Centre here held a lunch-hour demonstration on Wednesday to protest against rundown and unhygienic working conditions at the yard where trains are inspected and certified for journey.
High Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited is holding a study on developing high speed rail projects in the country.
CHENNAI: Southern Railway's loco running staff who drive long distance trains, suburban trains and goods trains staged a protest in front of Moore Market Complex suburban terminal demanding that railways introduce recommendations of a high power committee which suggested better regulation of working hours and increasing rest time.

Agra: In its bid to ensure safety and punctuality of the country's first semi-high speed train Gatimaan Express, Indian Railways has erected about 50km of barbed wire fences and walls at vulnerable zones of the high-speed corridor. The barriers have been installed to stave off stray animals from crossing the track.

A local train exceeding speed limit was stopped by the automatic application of emergency brakes at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on Wednesday.

Mumbai: Following the derailment of seven coaches of a Churchgate-bound fast local near Vile Parle station last month, the Railway Board is now planning to install a safety device that can monitor a train’s axle and alert the motorman in case of a malfunction.
NEW DELHI: In an attempt to bring in administrative efficiency, the railways has expedited the appointment process for top level posts to fill up 10 vacancies of general managers (GMs) of zonal railways and 50 divisional railway managers (DRMs) in 2015.
CHENNAI: With train passengers demanding more privacy at a premium, a group of engineers at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has suggested that AC III tier and AC II tier coaches can have two cabins each with light-weight aluminium doors.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Wednesday that the Railways will be a significant contributor to the 'Make in India' programme through its focus on indigenising production of a host of segments, including state-of-the-art locomotives, high-end equipment and processes, that go into the working of the network.
Indian Railways  today entered into a agreement with Adani PowerBSE 4.28 % for supplying 50 MW electricity at Rs 3.69 per unit for three years, which will result in saving of around Rs 150 crore annually.

India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge, the Bogibeel bridge on the Brahmaputra river in upper Assam, will be commissioned in June 2017, an official of the Northeast Frontier Railway said here on Wednesday.
Two unrecognised unions of Southern Railway, Southern Railway Employees Sangh (SRES) and Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) have complained about the delay in disbursement of productivity-linked bonus in Southern Railway, except for Salem railway division, announced by the Railway Board.

NAGPUR: A controversy over the railway ministry's quixotic move to close down its prestigious British-era graduate institute for railway mechanical engineers is fast gathering momentum.
In a move that is likely to benefit about 12.58 lakh non-gazetted railway employees, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the payments of productivity-linked bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages for the financial year 2014-15 to them. The total payments is estimated at Rs.1,030.02 crore, according to an official release.
The proposed colour scheme of the trains is supposed to liberate the designers and break the monotony.

NEW DELHI: Trade unions, including the RSS-backed Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), have said the government's proposed industrial relation draft bill cannot be supported as it will make it easy for companies to hire and fire workers.
MADURAI: Miscreants pelting stones at trains are putting passengers at risk, with some of them managing to cause serious injuries. Three such incidents took place in a period of 10 days recently, in which five people, including a loco pilot, suffered injuries. Rail users and employee unions have urged railway authorities to take immediate action to curb this menace.
KOCHI: Loco-pilots of the Railways fear that the imminent festival season would be a taxing time for them, like in the previous years, as the additional train services would worsen their already burdened schedule, owing to severe manpower shortage.

Indian Railways employees are likely to be given 78-day wages as productivity-linked bonus (PLB) for the fiscal 2014-15, the same as in the last three years, despite the financial crunch.

In-what could prove to be a setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan of setting up railway universities in India, an internal report of the Railway Board has suggested that such universities are not necessary.

Payment of Bonus (Amendment) ordinance 2007 according to which section 12 of the payment of Bonus Act 1965 had been amended raising the ceiling for calculation purpose from salary of 2500/- P.M. to Rs.3500/-P.M. w.e.f. 01.04.2006. Also amended the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 to raise the eligibility limit for payment of bonus from the salary or wage of Rs. 3500/- per month to Rs. 10000/- per month.

Started in 1927, the SCRA, one of the oldest programme in India involved selection of about 30 candidates by the UPSC to the undergraduate programme in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) at Jamalpur.

BEIJING: China has approved construction plans for three railway projects worth a total of 109.3 billion yuan ($17.2 billion), the country's top economic planner said in statements on its website on Monday.

New Delhi: The railway ministry has decided on the firms and consortia that will study the technical feasibility of three bullet train corridors- High Speed Rail in India- that comprise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Diamond Quadrilateral.
Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chairman and CEO of GE, by his own admission believes the $148-billion conglomerate with a diverse portfolio ranging from light bulbs and power equipment to healthcare and locomotives is witnessing its biggest transformation in history.
BAREILLY: A sleek design with aluminium coaches powered by double engines — one each on the front and rear—and each coach with individual backup power, besides cruising speeds of up to 250 kmph will be among the highlights of high-speed trains to be introduced in the country shortly.
CHENNAI: Four express trains and six suburban trains on Chennai-Gummidipoondi-Gudur route were delayed by an hour after the locomotive of Madurai-Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express broke down near Ennore railway station here at 10am.

A brief overview of the state of Indian Railways through two simple charts.

Railways have been an indispensable part of the Indian subcontinent. Being one of the world’s largest networks it spans 1,15,000 km of track over a route of 65,436 km. Despite its record of constant increase in the number of passenger-journeys, the Indian railways faced a rather unpleasant decline in the number of passengers travelling in the year 2014.
Jaipur: Suspended IAS officer Ashok Singhvi was on Saturday denied bail by a local court in Udaipur in a case related to bribery involving Rs 2.55 crore. Singhvi is among eight persons who were arrested recently by Anti-Corruption Bureau in the case and are presently under judicial custody in Udaipur.
The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, has reached a wage settlement with workers of its Gurgaon and Manesar plants, under which employees will get an average salary hike of around Rs 16,800 per month spread over three years.

LONDON: Britain's new opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn vowed Sunday to press ahead with plans to renationalise the rail network to create a "People's Railway", if his party got into power.

In his first major policy announcement since becoming leader, the left-wing politician said England's rail franchises would be brought under public ownership as the contracts for each one expire, media reports said.

Passengers will soon be able to travel from Kunming to Bangkok for only RMB700.00 (THB3,931), a third of the current airfare. That new cheaper mode of transportation will be a 840 kilometer trans China-Thai railway, which was announced over the weekend and is set to be completed in three years time.

The joint consultative machinery for all Central Government staff has demanded that one rank one pension be implemented for all current and future pensioners. The demand is to implement it in the Seventh Pay Commission.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to increase dearness allowance (DA) to 119% from 113%, which will potentially benefit over one crore government employees and pensioners.

National president of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and former MP G Sanjeeva Reddy today announced that various trade unions would hold another nation-wide strike on November 23 in line with a similar protest held earlier on September 2. He said that over one crore workers across the country would go on strike that day.

Conservative MP David Davis said it was like something out of “Franco’s Spain.” Leading human rights groups called it “a major attack on civil liberties”. Vince Cable described it as “vindictive,” “ideological” and “provocative”. Business associations warned it could have “unintended consequences”.

NEW DELHI: A mechanism to alert train drivers about unmanned railway crossings on the pattern of planes will be launched soon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today.

He said the technology has been devised by engineers of Varanasi-based diesel locomotive factory on his advice.

Suresh Prabhu holds meeting with GMs on strengthening safety mechanism

Worried over the increasing number of accidents, the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu convened a special meeting of General Managers on “Safety in Rail Operations” here on Tuesday.
BAREILLY: In a move that heralds the beginning of the era of high-speed trains in the country, the first batch of 30 divisional railway managers (DRMs) are off to Italy to study the nitty-gritty of running and maintaining the track, the security aspects and other infrastructure required for such trains. The officials will attend a 15-day specially-designed course at SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan.

New Delhi, Sep 18: Inching towards fulfilling its announcement made in this year's railway budget, the Indian Railways on Friday said it has developed a prototype of hybrid vacuum toilet which uses only 500 ml of water for flushing.


A loco-pilot was injured after unidentified youths pelted stones at him when he was driving the Sengottai-Madurai Passenger here on Friday.

The news report that passenger traffic on the Indian Railways fell by 150 million in the first five months of the financial year is alarming. Such a sharp fall of passengers in a buoyant economy only spells trouble for an organisation which is the backbone of the transport sector. This is certainly only a precursor on how the deterioration in quality of services is going to impinge on the growth of railways in the coming years. Worse things are likely to happen soon.

After frustrated commuters attacked a stationmaster on Tuesday night, the All India Station Masters Association has asked that their uniform be cancelled, as it makes them easy targets when train services are disrupted

Central government specifically has asked the 7cpc to submit its report only by 31-12-2015 though by now the report is ready. This raises the apprehension about the character of the recommendation which may affect the govt's face. This will force also the JCM staff side to postpone the strike date. However prepare the workers on the demands using the gap.

IRKED OVER the recent rail accidents, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Tuesday pulled up the general managers (GMs) — officials in charge of running operations in the 17 railway zones — telling them that he would not listen to any excuses on the safety front. He also gave them a six-month deadline to take appropriate action.


RAIL Vikash Nigam (RVNL), a special purpose vehicle set up by India's National Railway Board to manage electrification projects in the states of Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Telengana, has awarded Isloux Corsán, Spain, three contracts to electrify three lines totalling 563 single track-km.
This is probably what you call shaken, not stirred. Soon after a series of rail mishaps in last few months have started questioning railway ministry's ambitions, the railway minister Suresh Prabhu is keeping no stones unturned to make Indian Railways safer.

A mobile application for use by the railway passengers of South Western Railway to lodge their complaints on security issues in trains and railway stations was launched here on Friday.


Railway Board Chairman A.K. Mittal has said that a detailed inquiry has been ordered into the derailment of the Duronto Express at Martur Railway Station, which killed two passengers, and all aspects of the accident would be inquired into by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Central Circle).


Shimla (SML): One of the most peaceful train journeys in India – the Unesco-recognised Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track – turned into the site of a tragedy on Saturday when three of the five bogeys of a chartered train derailed at Taksal near Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh, killing passengers for the second time in its over-a-century-old history. Two of the 37 British and Canadian nationals who had booked special train were killed in the accident; 13 others were injured, two of them are seriously hurt.

In 2015 alone, there have been eight train accidents due to derailment. Nearly 190 people have lost their lives in these accidents this year alone, with hundreds others injured, and thousands others displaced due to disrupted services and diverted trains.


Japan has agreed to modernise railway stations across the country while participating in Indian Railways' $140 billion (Rs 930650 crore) investment plan over the next five years.


Two women passengers were killed and eight others injured when a speeding Duronto Express from Secunderabad proceeding towards Lok Manya Tilak terminus in Mumbai (Train No 12990) derailed at Martur Railway Station, 20 km away from Kalaburagi city in the early hours of Saturday.

HYDERABAD: Chairman of Railway Board chairman AK Mittal held a high-level board meeting with the general managers of five zones at Rail Nilayam in Secunderabad on Friday to discuss plans for raising the efficiency and growth of the railways.
VARANASI: In a bid to contribute to energy conservation and environment preservation through its daily operations, North-Eastern railways (NER) are planning for installation of solar power panels and energy efficient light emitting diodes (LED) which consumes lesser energy and doubles the illumination.

Its recommendations’ impact need not give us jitters because the rise in government wages will amount to only 0.8 per cent of GDP.

KOLKATA: The Indian Railways has slashed the cost of transporting iron ore for exports for the first time since March 2012 by levying a flat distance-based charge across all slabs in response to "significant changes in the market".


Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said for using geospatial technology and satellite technology for various operations of Railways, a Memorandum of Understanding will soon be signed between the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) (the IT arm of the Ministry) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).


The object in India for such a density of population should be to construct locomotive railways for trunk lines of communication, and horse railways for the short branches, says Bibek Debroy.
The West-Central Railway (Headquarter: Jabalpur) Zone has become the first Railway Zone on Indian Railways to eliminate all unmanned level crossings from its system by 31st August, 2015.
CHENNAI: Railway employees will join an indefinite strike called by central government employees starting November 23 if the Union government does not respond to the one-day strike held by trade unions on Wednesday, said N Kanniah, working president of All India Railwayman's Federation and general secretary of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU). Railways was exempted from Wednesday's strike.


MUMBAI: Ahead of the Bihar elections, the government is trying to expedite the much-delayed order for setting up two manufacturing units for railway locomotives that will attract an investment of Rs 42,000 crore in the state and two international majors are leading the race for it.


Normal life was affected in various parts of the country, including in West Bengal, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana as 10 central trade unions on Wednesday went on a day-long nationwide strike to protest against changes in labour laws and privatisation of PSUs.

The Railway Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the Bangalore-Nanded Express train accident at a manned level crossing in Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh.Commissioner for Railway Safety, Southern Zone, will conduct the inquiry.


With all the technological and innovative prowess India has, yet another tragic railway accident and the death of rail passengers erodes the faith of people in the country’s largest transport system, the Indian Railways.


The South Western Railway Passengers’ Welfare Committee has appealed to Railway Board Chairman A.K. Mittal to run some special festival trains to different destinations from the division.

Indian Railways has been analysed by expert groups and committees extensively and frequently. Two recent expert panels—led by Rakesh Mohan and Bibek Debroy—currently engage attention. Strangely, IR’s own record of any volitional reform initiatives has been lacklustre.
Haridwar: There is resentment brewing among station masters in the Indian Railways. This is due to non-fulfillment of some of their demands which they consider long overdue. Now, the All-India Station Masters Association's (AISMA) secretary-general V N Chaudhari has called upon them to gear up for chakka jam on November 23 if these demands are not fulfilled by September 2.


Several express and passenger trains were cancelled or diverted on account of the derailment of Train Number 16594 Bangalore City – Nanded Express while passing level crossing gate between Rangepalli and Penukonda Stations on Dharmavaram section of Bangalore Division of South Western Railway on Monday morning.
Five people including a Karnataka legislator were killed early on Monday morning when a granite-laden truck rammed into an express train at a level crossing in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur, the second fatal accident this month involving the railways.

Echoing one of his predecessors Dinesh Trivedi of the Trinamul Congress, Union railway minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu on Friday compared the Indian Railways’ present condition with that of a patient admitted in the ICU. He also ruled out the possibility of the Indian Railway beating the Chinese Railway overnight and called for investments for infrastructure development to match its pace.
