Use of Unconventional fuel on Indian Railways
Trains with Bio-Diesel blend of upto 20% have been done on a few locomotives in Northern, South Eastern & Southern Railways. No large scale induction of Bio-Diesel as an alternate fuel has been done due to non-availability of Bio-Diesel in large quantities at economical prices. However, very small scale operations in Southern Railway, primarily on shunting locomotives, has been continuing for past many years.

SWR to build Subways to close major level crossings

BANGALORE: S.W.Railway is planning to build subways and to close major level crossings this financial year for smooth rail traffic. Despite being one of the smaller zones, SWR has taken this major step to enhance safety. “To improve railway safety, we have taken up construction of 85 subways and plan to close 82 level crossings this year,” Ashok Kumar Mital, General Manager/SWR told. “So far 14 subways have been completed and 21 level crossings have been closed till July-end,” he added.

Manhandling of loco pilot flayed

The Integral Coach Factory at Chennai has joined hands with IIT Madras to design coaches that will use solar energy to power the air conditioning systems. In addition, the solar energy will be used to power the lighting inside the coaches. This would be the first project of its kind that Indian Railways is undertaking to tap solar energy.
