GUWAHATI, Dec 18 - Members of the Purbanchaliya Rail Karmi Parishad staged a daylong dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, recently over various demands regarding Assam and the North Eastern region.

The Parishad also submitted a memorandum to the Central Government, seeking fulfilment of its demands.

Among the demands of the Parishad is a call to the Railway Ministry to undertake double-tracking work in Assam and setting up of a railway coach and wagon factory at New Bongaigaon.

It has also called for the completion of the Bogibeel bridge project by 2017 and for the sanction of another broad-gauge line from Abhayapuri to Changsari via Barpeta.

The union also called upon the Government to set up a separate Railway division at Badarpur.

It has also demanded setting up of a model railway hospital and nursing college at New Bongaigaon.

The Parishad has demanded 100 per cent reservation for locals in recruitment for Grade III and IV posts in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.

It has also asked the Government to increase the recruitment of locals from the North East in the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The Parishad has also alleged discrimination against Grade III and IV employees in the 7th Central Pay Commission recommendations and demanded that the anomalies should be corrected.
