On September 15, seven coaches had derailed due to an axle failure in a local train at Vile Parle station.

FOLLOWING the derailment of seven coaches of a Churchgate-bound fast local near Vile Parle station last month, the Railway Board is now planning to install a safety device that can monitor a train’s axle and alert the motorman in case of a malfunction.

On September 15, seven coaches had derailed due to an axle failure in a local train at Vile Parle station. The Railway Board then initiated a high-level inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Western Circle) Sushil Chandra.

Vile Parle derailment: Western Railway to send faulty axle to govt-approved lab for another test

“It had come to light that after the Churchgate bound local left Andheri station, the motorman, S K Singh had sensed that something had come between the tracks and the wheel, however it dragged along with the wheels. For about 1.5 km , the broken axle was being dragged along like a foreign object. It was later revealed that the axle of one of the coaches had broken giving rise to wobbling which later led to the train’s derailment,” said Shailendra Kumar , Divisional Railway Manager of WR.

A high level discussion has been initiated in the Railway Board which is also reportedly planning to outsource the installation of a safety device that could possibly help motormen or loco-pilots understand the situation of the axles in running trains.

“This device is called as ‘automated on-board safety device’ and it would be installed in the motormen or loco-pilots cabin. The incident of axle break in Vile parle derailment is counted as the rarest of the rare case. However we do not want to risk the lives of thousands of commuters travelling in our trains. This device would be connected with the axle of the train, with the help of sensor in case of any problem with axle it would indicate it to the motorman or loco-pilot of the train,” said a source.
