Panel gives 10-point guidelines for RDSO’s trial team

The Bombay High Court-appointed expert committee has submitted 10-point guidelines to the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to follow while the latter conducts field trials at nine suburban platforms. The height of platforms at these nine stations have been raised to 920 mm.
The committee has also requested the RDSO to conduct a test trial for 1200-mm platform height by raising a portion of the platform to that height to check whether the footboard and the top of the platform can be maintained at nearly the same height, without causing accident.
A team of engineers from the research body of the Indian Railways arrived on Saturday to begin preparatory work in Mumbai. Officials said the testing train is expected to be in the city by Sunday, following which trials will be conducted during night. “The RDSO is expected to begin trials by Sunday or Monday,” said a senior railway officer.
The suburban railways have increased the height of nine platforms at Andheri, Vile Parle, Elphinstone Road, Parel, Charni Road and Grant Road stations.
“Since long distance mail/express and passenger trains also run or ply from suburban platforms, the RDSO will have to examine the impact of raising the height for platforms that serve wide-body suburban trains exclusively and those that serve suburban as well as non-suburban trains,” said a committee member.
