Bangalore-Hassan railway line project to be delayed further

Published: 13th November 2013 10:46 AM

Though the State government has finally decided to allow the Bangalore-Hassan railway line to pass through the stud farm near Kunigal, the project, sanctioned over 17 years ago, will be delayed further.
The government is yet to hand over 62 acres required for the project and at least `600 crore to complete works.

South Western Railway Chief Administrative Officer Adesh Sharma said, “The project would have required more time if the government had not allowed us to revert to the original alignment. The farmers had challenged our move to change the alignment to avoid passing through the stud farm in the court”.
Infrastructure Development Minister Santosh Lad said the government will release its share of funds for the project when the Railway Board does. “We have initiated the process to acquire the required land and it is delayed due to some litigations. We will hand over the remaining land at the earliest. The onus is now on the railways to start work as we are willing to do whatever is required,” he added.
According to the original alignment, the railway line was supposed to pass through the stud farm owned by Vittal Mallya near Kunigal. As the farm owners objected to the alignment, stating that the railway line might disturb horses on the farm, the State government and the Railways were planning to realign the line.
DPR on LRTS Project Ready
The State government announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the proposed Light Rail Transit system (LRTS) for the city was prepared on Monday.
Speaking to Express, Infrastructure Development Minister Santosh Lad said, “The DPR has been prepared by an England-based firm named Capita Simonds and it has been forwarded to the Finance Department for approval. We will place it before the Cabinet after it is approved by the department”.
The Bangalore Airport Rail Link Ltd had suggested that the transit system be introduced in two corridors - J P Nagar to Hebbal via Outer Ring Road and Tavarekere on Magadi Road to Toll Gate near Rajajinagar Industrial Estate. The J P Nagar to Hebbal corridor covers 31 km and the Tavarekere - Toll Gate corridor 10 km. Both corridors are expected to act as feeders to the Metro and are expected to cost `8,000 crore, Lad added.
