Railway institutes inquiry into derailment at Roha

MUMBAI: The railway has instituted an inquiry into the derailment of a goods wagon at Roha station on Friday afternoon, resulting in Konkan Railway services being suspended for more than three hours.

Said a railway official, "There was no casualty due to the derailment. But it badly affected the train operations along the Konkan Railway route." At least five long distance trains, including two holiday specials from Mumbai to Goa and a Trivandrum-Delhi Rajdhani Express, were stopped on tracks for more than three hours. The goods train was rerailed around 7pm on Friday. Trains were running three to four hours behind schedule, with thousands of passengers being majorly inconvenienced, sources said.

Said KR chief public relations officer Siddheshwar Telugu, "We ensured that the trains which were stopped were taken to nearest stations. After the derailment of the goods wagon, in which nobody was injured, we had to take safety precautions. This is the reason why we had to halt five trains along the Konkan route - the Mandovi Express coming towards Mumbai was halted at Khed station, the Rajdhani Express was stopped at Veer station, one Holiday special from Mumbai to Goa was halted at Kolad while the other was stopped at Mangaon station. A Kochivelli-Bhavnagar train was stopped at Adavli station."

He further stated that the purpose of halting at stations was to enable passengers to buy refreshments and also get updates about the problem from station officials. Sources said that despite this, passengers were inconvenienced due to the long halt and the delay in reaching destination. Many passengers were on a summer vacation and the delay disturbed their travel plans, sources stated.
