Railways ties up funds at zonal levels for 360 pending projects

With the Ministry of Railways back with the Congress after 16 years, a fresh wave of change is sweeping through the ministry.
For the first time, the railways has prioritised its 360 pending projects worth about Rs 4 lakh crore and tied up funds with them at zonal levels.

RAILWAYS TO HIKE PASSENGER FARE BY 5 TO 10 PAISE PER KM

Faced with mounting deficit of over Rs 20,000 crore in the passenger segment, Railways is keen on raising passenger fares between 5—10 paise per km in the coming months to generate about Rs 4,000 crore revenue.
Reviewing the performance of Railways, the Prime Minister’s Office has asked the Chairman Railway Board to finalise and submit its recommendations on the constitution of proposed Rail Tariff Authority (RTA) by December 31.PTI

BELLARY: A host of passengers of the Kolhapur-bound Hyderabad-Kolhapur express had a miraculous escape after the train rammed into an empty goods train. There were no casualties. However, the engine of the express train and four wagons of the goods train got derailed.

SRINAGAR, Dec 28: The Railways today said here that the train will chug between Banihal and Baramulla in March next year and in April on Udhampur-Katra section of the prestigious Udhampur-Baramulla rail link.
After the intervention by Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Farooq Shah, the successful trial run of the track tramping machine on Qazigund-Banihal section took place this afternoon.

Mamata has misled people, says parliamentary panel

A parliamentary committee has criticised Mamata Banerjee for “misleading the people” by announcing a scheme without any basis and support in the Railway budget for 2011-12.
In its report tabled in the Rajya Sabha, the Railway Convention Committee disapproved of the manner in which Ms. Banerjee, as Railway Minister, announced the Pradhan Mantri Rail Vikas Yojana for developing backward areas. Under the scheme, she promised to execute 114 socially desirable projects that would require Rs. 5 lakh crore in additional funding.

Kashmir rail project could run into complexities: CAG

Already way behind schedule, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla-Rail Link (USBRL), aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country with an all-weather route, is likely to run into further complexities and higher cost overruns, says the Comptroller and Auditor General.
In its performance audit, the CAG observed that the national project, scheduled to be completed in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs. 3,077 crore, was now expected to be completed only in 2017-18 at a cost of Rs. 19,565 crore.

Unmanned level crossings fast becoming death traps

  
VISAKHAPATNAM: Fifty-year-old Motilal Murma from Bihar lost both his limbs after being run over by a train at an unmanned level crossing(ULC) in Gopalapatnam on Wednesday. The incident occurred when he was trying to cross the railway track. In another incident, a 55-year-old Kapparada resident, P Appa Rao died after he came under a train at the ULC of Gavara Kancharapalem on December 15.

Railways tops in corruption complaints: CVC

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) Over 8,800 complaints of alleged graft against railway employees were received by the Central Vigilance Commission last year.

A total of 8,805 complaints of alleged corruption were received against Railways employees, followed by 8,430 against banks employees and 5,026 against Income tax officials, 4,783 against Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and 3,921 against Urban Development employees during 2011, the CVC said in its annual report.

Mumbai: Five commuters died on Saturday following injuries sustained in railway mishaps, according to the government railway police (GRP). The number of accidental deaths on the railways had crossed 2,550 till September this year, with more cases being reported on the Central line than on the Western line.

In its budget for 2012-13, Railways had proposed its highest ever plan outlay of Rs 60,100 crore. It was planning to generate Rs 18,050 crore through internal resources.

Railway revenue earnings up by 19.23%

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IBNS) The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during 1st April to 30th November 2012 were Rs.78868.17 crore compared to Rs. 66150.48 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 19.23 per cent.


Railways gear up for foggy challenge

LUCKNOW: Railway has chalked out a detailed safety and operational plan to gear up to challenge of fog through a multi-pronged strategy. Railway had commenced planning of trains operations in September and has cancelled 13 pairs of trains, partially cancelled 3 pairs of trains and diverted 2 pairs of trains. Railway has also overhauled its safety machinery to ensure zero failure of its equipment and working systems.

PPP in Railways:

A number of policies were announced during Eleventh Five Year Plan to encourage private investment in terminals and wagons. These include: Private Freight Terminal policy (PFT), Special Freight Train Operations (SFTO) policy, Automobile Freight Train Operators (AFTO) policy, Auto-hub-ancillary policy, Operation of Container Trains, R3i (Railways’ Infrastructure for Industry Initiative) and R2CI (Rail connectivity to coal and iron ore mines) policies to facilitate participation of private sector in the development of Railway Infrastructure. 

CGE to get bigger and better quarters

The quarters of central government employees are set to become bigger and better.

Ahead of the election season, the urban development ministry is planning to not just 
increase the houses' areas by an average of 25 per cent but also fit them out with modular kitchens and electric chimneys. The last time the housing norms were revised was in 1981.

Katju wants media regulator with punitive powers

‘Media persons care two hoots for Press Council as it can only admonish’

Press Council of India chairman Markandey Katju on Wednesday sought a statutory regulator with punitive powers, one that was “more representative,” for the media.
Mr. Katju told journalists here on Wednesday that many media persons “cared two hoots” for the Press Council of India (PCI), which only had powers to admonish newspapers. He said many journalists did not even respond to the notices issued by the PCI as they knew it had no punitive powers such as suspending publication licences for newspapers, while the electronic media was out of its ambit.
