with mounting deficit of over Rs 20,000 crore in the passenger segment,
Railways is keen on raising passenger fares between 5—10 paise per km in the
coming months to generate about Rs 4,000 crore revenue.
Reviewing
the performance of Railways, the Prime Minister’s Office has asked the Chairman
Railway Board to finalise and submit its recommendations on the constitution of
proposed Rail Tariff Authority (RTA) by December 31.PTI

SRINAGAR, Dec 28: The Railways today said here that the train will chug between Banihal and Baramulla in March next year and in April on Udhampur-Katra section of the prestigious Udhampur-Baramulla rail link.
After the intervention by Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Farooq Shah, the successful trial run of the track tramping machine on Qazigund-Banihal section took place this afternoon.

NEW DELHI, December 21, 2012Mamata has misled people, says parliamentary panel
A parliamentary committee has criticised Mamata Banerjee for “misleading the people” by announcing a scheme without any basis and support in the Railway budget for 2011-12.
In its report tabled in the Rajya Sabha, the Railway Convention Committee disapproved of the manner in which Ms. Banerjee, as Railway Minister, announced the Pradhan Mantri Rail Vikas Yojana for developing backward areas. Under the scheme, she promised to execute 114 socially desirable projects that would require Rs. 5 lakh crore in additional funding.

NEW DELHI, December 21, 2012Kashmir rail project could run into complexities: CAG
Already way behind schedule, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla-Rail Link (USBRL), aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country with an all-weather route, is likely to run into further complexities and higher cost overruns, says the Comptroller and Auditor General.
In its performance audit, the CAG observed that the national project, scheduled to be completed in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs. 3,077 crore, was now expected to be completed only in 2017-18 at a cost of Rs. 19,565 crore.

Unmanned level crossings fast becoming death traps
VISAKHAPATNAM: Fifty-year-old Motilal Murma from Bihar lost both his limbs after being run
over by a train at an unmanned level
crossing(ULC) in Gopalapatnam on Wednesday. The incident occurred
when he was trying to cross the railway track. In another incident, a
55-year-old Kapparada resident, P Appa Rao died after he came under a train at
the ULC of Gavara Kancharapalem on December 15.

Railways tops in
corruption complaints: CVC
New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) Over 8,800 complaints of alleged graft against railway
employees were received by the Central Vigilance Commission last year.
A total of 8,805 complaints of alleged corruption were received against Railways employees, followed by 8,430 against banks employees and 5,026 against Income tax officials, 4,783 against Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and 3,921 against Urban Development employees during 2011, the CVC said in its annual report.

Mumbai’s lifeline is a big killer Railway Mishap Toll Crosses 2,500 This Year
Mumbai: Five commuters died on Saturday following injuries sustained in railway mishaps, according to the government railway police (GRP). The number of accidental deaths on the railways had crossed 2,550 till September this year, with more cases being reported on the Central line than on the Western line.
