CHENNAI: Four express trains and six suburban trains on Chennai-Gummidipoondi-Gudur route were delayed by an hour after the locomotive of Madurai-Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express broke down near Ennore railway station here at 10am.
The locomotive was damaged after it hit an abandoned rail.
A railway official said that track renewal work was on and a few workers left a rail too close to the track. The loco was repaired and the train services were restored at 11.30am.
Sources said the damage was minimal as the loco pilot spotted the rail.
"Workers, who were moving rail, abandoned it close to the track when they spotted the train approaching. The pilot was alerted about the piece of rail near the track," said an official.
He said that the incident would be investigated as it was a safety beach.
