Alert loco pilot saves injured man

Special Correspondent

An alert loco pilot rescued a severely injured person lying next to the railway track in Belgaum district on Monday.
It was around 11.50 a.m. that Anish Mon Joseph, running the goods train with oil tankers from Hubli to Desur, near Belgaum, saw the man, who is yet to be identified, lying next to the track between Tavagatti and Nagargalli railway stations.
Mr. Anish, who has been a loco pilot for the last 12 years, immediately stopped the train and with the help of a gangman, lifted the injured and took him to Nagargalli railway station.
“I alerted the Nagargalli station master to arrange for an ambulance. I reached the station around 12.05 p.m. and handed the injured man to the station master. He was administered first aid before shifting him to Khanapur general hospital. He has now been shifted to Belgaum general hospital,” Mr. Anish told The Hindu over phone.
“The forest is thick and has wildlife. We have sighted sloth bears several times and have heard that tigers also roam the forests. My conscience did not allow me to leave without helping him,” he said. According to Mr. Anish, the man, aged around 40, was carrying a general ticket from Jharkhand to Vasco. He said that he could have been a passenger of the Amaravati Express (Howrah-Vasco) that had passed 10 minutes before the goods train.
