Railway staff busy with union poll
Chennai: Over
50 per cent of the employees exercised their franchise in a secret
ballot aimed at electing the recognised trade union in Southern Railway
in Chennai on Thursday. As many as 8 trade unions are in the fray.
The 3-day poll began on April 25 in Central and Egmore railway stations and other Southern railway office in Chennai. Over 86,000 employees in Chennai, Thiruvanathapuram, Palakad, Salem, Madurai and Tiruchy divisions and Perambur Loco Workshop are eligible to cast their votes in election.
Counting will take place on May 2. Zonal railway administration has made the arrangements for the poll. The election conducted for choosing the trade unions, which are eligible for holding talks with the railway management. The trade unions, which secure a minimum of 30 per cent votes in the election, would be declared as ‘recognised trade union’.
Employees including C and D category staff, rail engine drivers, traveling ticket examiners, station officers, employees at engine maintenance, signal, electrical and mechanical divisions will vote for any of trade unions namely — Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU), Dakshin Railway Karmikh Sangh (DRKS), Railway Labour Liberation Front (RLLF), Railway Mazdur Union (RMU), Southern Railway Anna Employees Union (SRAEU), Southern Railway Employees Unino (SRES), Southern Railway Mazdur Union (SRMU) and Southern Employees Front (SEF).
