CBI arrests locomotive inspector for Rs 10-crore diesel fraud

Express news service : Sat Apr 27 2013
The anti-corruption bureau of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI ACB) has arrested the chief loco inspector of the Railway Consumer Depot in Daund in connection with an alleged diesel fraud to the tune of Rs 10 crore. He has been accused of falsifying records of High Speed Diesel.

CBI also suspects some senior officials to be involved in the racket.
The arrested officer, identified as Virsingh Chaudhary, a resident of Janata Colony in Daund, about 60 km from the city, had misused his official position to falsify documents of high speed diesel.
The remand application, submitted by CBI inspector Sanjay Gokhale to the court stated that in February a case was registered against the fraud based on information that was received by the bureau. "The source revealed that Singh, in connivance with other officers, used his official position to falsify documents of high speed diesel of volume of 20,33,092 litres," the application read.
Searches were conducted at railway consumer depot in Daund as well as Chaudhary's residence. "Further investigation was also conducted. All that proved Chaudhary's role in the conspiracy to embezzle 20,33,092 litres of High Speed Diesel." the application further stated.
Earlier, Chaudhary had applied for interim and anticipatory bail, which were, however, rejected by the court. In spite of repeated notices served to Chaudhary, he did not appear before the court or the investigating officer. Finally, he was arrested on Thursday evening. He has been remanded in police custody till May 3.
Requesting police custody of Chaudhary, Gokhale wrote in the application, "The accused is a mid-level employee. We need to obtain details about the senior officials who shared in the proceeds of the crime. We also want to track down the money amassed by the accused and his accomplices."
CBI also sought permission to scrutinise the documents in question to ascertain how the process of misappropriation actually took place. This, Gokhale added, would also require the cooperation of other railway officials.
Chaudhary has been booked under several sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and some of the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for forgery and criminal breach of trust by a public servant. Public prosecutor Vivek Saxena represented the CBI-ACB in court.
