An alert loco pilot stopped a train and saved a woman, who was attempting suicide by jumping on to the tracks along with her four-month-old daughter, at Byappanahalli on Sunday.
The incident took place when Prashanthi Express train reached the level-crossing near Military Gate at 2.15 p.m. Loco pilot B.S.B.K. Naidu noticed the woman with the baby jumping in front of the train in the nick of time.
He stopped the train immediately and rushed to her aid. Other motorists who were waiting at the crossing also came to help.
The woman was rescued and handed over to the jurisdictional police. She has been identified as Anitha (21).
The police said her live-in partner, Jagadish, had thrown her out of their house along with their baby after constantly harassing her.
Jagadish is a private firm employee and a resident of Viveknagar. Dejected over being thrown out of the house, Anitha decided to end her life, the police said.
The Byappanahalli police transferred the case to the jurisdictional Viveknagar police station.
The Viveknagar police are in a fix as the victim refused to file a complaint against Jagadish, who is in Chennai for work, but wanted the police to break open the house to allow her inside.
“We have asked her to go to her parents’ house, but she is refusing to do so,” a senior police officer said.
