Head on generation system introduced on New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani would save Rs.5.5 crore in power costs annually

New Delhi: In a technology boost to Indian Railways, the government on Wednesday introduced a so-called head on generation (HoG) system on the New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani that would save Rs.5.5 crore in power costs annually.
The technology has been introduced on a long-haul train for the first time in India.
HoG is a clean technology that taps power supply overhead power lines and distributes it to train coaches.
At present the Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains run on end on generation (EoG) system in which train coaches receive power from diesel-fueled power cars for lighting and air-conditioning.
The new technology doesn’t create noise pollution and helps to save diesel costs besides making it environment-friendly.
“Money saved is money earned. So the savings we make by such technology introduction would be used as investment for railways and we could help rebuild railway infrastructure,” railway minister Suresh Prabhu said.
