The Southern Railway is giving a smart makeover to the railway in Chennai, India, with a variety of new kiosks and plasma screen display boards. The company has already deployed a ticket vending kiosk, with plans to install other kiosks later, according to a report by India Times.
The ticket vending kiosk is designed to accept coins and cash. The goal of this deployment is reduce long lines at ticketing booths. The plasma screen itself will showcase information in three different languages. The railway has already installed two 25-by-16-foot screens to loop educational or comedic videos as well as railway information.
The railway is also currently testing touchscreen kiosks, which will allow users to check their passenger name record status. "The touchscreen kiosks will be placed at more than five locations in the station. Since it will have advertisement, railways will also earn revenue from it," a Southern Railway official said in the report.
