A senior bureaucrat in the Delhi government and his personal assistant were arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe after an AAP volunteer filed a complaint against him.
Sanjay Pratap Singh was allegedly caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 2.2 lakh in his office from the owner of a firm that provided security guards and peons to his department. Singh is principal secretary in the department of welfare of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minorities.
Singh had allegedly demanded a bribe to clear the firm’s monthly bills. The owner of the firm, who also works as an AAP volunteer in East Delhi, had lodged a complaint with the CBI.“Singh wanted a monthly bribe of Rs 2-3 lakh to clear his bills every month. That’s when the firm owner approached us,” said a CBI official.

After Kumar received the money, he went to the bureaucrat’s office to hand it over, said sources. A CBI team, which had been tailing Kumar, caught him and Singh red-handed, said sources. The duo have been charged by the CBI under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Gopal Mohan, anti-corruption advisor to Kejriwal, said that the complainant had approached him a few days ago. “He has been our volunteer since the India Against Corruption movement. Even now, he is the party’s volunteer in East Delhi….He said that when he went to Singh for the pending payment, he was told that the money would be handed over only after he coughs up Rs 2.2 lakh… Singh told him there was no other way”.
“After that, he came to me…complete guidance was given to him by the Delhi government and the AAP. On the basis of this, he went to the CBI… The AAP and its government have zero tolerance towards corruption… we took action against one of our senior-most officers,” he said.
