The National Trade Union Joint Action Committee held a rally at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall and subsequently held protest marches in the district. They also burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Labour Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal.

Harimuni Singh, secretary, CTU, Jalandhar, said the state government was against labourers and farmers. The Prime Minister was revising labour laws to facilitate capitalists which would mean more difficulties for labourers.

Rajesh Thapa, secretary, AITECH, Jalandhar, said the Labour Minister hadn’t taken any decision or stand in favour of labourers in the state so far.

Members of the union said in the coming elections the labour community would give a befitting reply to the state government.

Their main demands included Rs 15,000 as minimum wages for labourers, Rs 20,000 as wages for semi-skilled labourers, Rs 30,000 for skilled labourers, giving the power to decide on cases of payment of wages to the local Assistant Labour Commissioner, releasing of attendance cards to factory labourers, recruiting labour inspectors, increasing the gratuity fund limit, ESI and Provident Fund for those earning a salary of up to Rs 30,000, PFK receipt for labourers, stopping of police interference in labour cases, implementing labour court orders and awards, making factory owners to be present during labour hearing cases, shed and rooms for construction labourers, forming labourer committees, blue cards for labourers, 5-marla plots and sanctioning Rs 3 lakh for constructing houses.
