VARANASI: In a bid to contribute to energy conservation and environment preservation through its daily operations, North-Eastern railways (NER) are planning for installation of solar power panels and energy efficient light emitting diodes (LED) which consumes lesser energy and doubles the illumination.
According to NER spokesperson, Ashok Kumar, the railways are planning to resort to energy saver equipment which controls current voltage so that the current drawn is less. As a part of the energy conservation, while all the 90 W ceiling fans installed at railway stations under NER have been replaced with over 16,000 fans of 60 W, high mast lights installed at circulating areas and yards of stations under NER, have been fitted with sensitive electronic timers. Besides, nameplates of all the six stations under NER including Manduadih station and other offices have been fitted with LED lights.
Apart from this, small initiatives including phasing out of all incandescent bulbs from the railway premises and replacing with more energy efficient T5 fittings are also being considered. "For this, plans are afoot to replace 40 W tube lights with 56,500 energy efficient T5 tube light fittings. It is likely to be adopted soon," added Kumar.
He further informed that the provisions for installation of energy efficient LED lights at NER railway stations, including Manduadih and Varanasi city stations, have already been made. Also, the work of electrification of as many as 512 manned level crossings using solar energy has been completed. Notably, the Allahabad city railway station under Varanasi division received 'Energy Efficient Station' award by the ministry of power, Government of India in 2014. The adoption of energy efficient methods and technologies in the previous years has not only contributed in conservation of energy but is also reaping benefits in improving the environmental conditions. As per the data, in the last two years, NER has conserved about 32 lakh units of electrical energy, saving revenue worth Rs. 2.33 crore.
Likewise, Northern Railways (NR) is also planning for the installation of solar lights and LED's which are already being distributed in colonies. "Keeping in mind the need for energy conservation, authorities are planning to have efficiency in energy consumption with the use of LED's and alternative sources of energy. The distribution of LED lights for conservation of energy is being done in our colonies as of now," shared chief area manager of Cantonment railway station under NR, Ravi Prakash Chaturvedi.
