Gangman dies, engineer assaulted

According to police, one Chhatarpal (28) was carrying out repair work on the stretch between Sahibabad and Ghaziabad railway stations when the Delhi-Saharanpur passenger train mowed him to death around 8pm on Friday.

This is not the first time such an incident has taken place on this stretch. On October 27, 2014, a 45-year-old railway gangman, who was working on the railway tracks, was run over by a train near Sahibabad railway station.

Protesting against the lack of adequate security for gangmen, the mob allegedly attacked senior section engineer Ombir Singh. Senior railway officials and government railway police (GRP) had to rush to the spot to prevent the incident from turning violent. The mob demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.

"We have a fixed policy in the Railways regarding compensation. The body has been sent for postmortem. There was a scuffle between officials during the agitations and one of our engineers came under attack," said assistant divisional engineer V K Sharma.

"The matter has been sorted out following talks with the workers

," said Devesh Chopra, divisional railway traffic manager, Ghaziabad.
