BENGALURU: A step towards improving passenger amenities at the City
Railway station was taken on Tuesday with the signing of an MoU between
the Bangalore Railway Division and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, a public
sector company run by the Ministry of Railways.
The MoU was signed in the office of the divisional railway manager by Alok Tiwari, chief project manager of RVNL’s Bengaluru branch and Sunanda Arul, Additional Divisonal Railway Manager (ADRM) of the Bangalore Division.
Speaking to Express, Tiwari said that of all stations in South India, Chennai Central station and the Bangalore City station were selected by RVNL’s corporate office at New Delhi to carry out their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
“It is the first time we will be associated with the Railways. We have been associated with improving health and sanitation in other sectors but never ventured into Railways earlier,” the Manager said.
Other PSUs under the Ministry like IRCON, RITES and CONCOR will be taking up work at different stations, he added.
On the costs, Tiwari said, “We have just made a beginning towards working with the Railways by signing it today. It will be a long-term one and we will conduct a joint inspection and identify whatever is required at the Bangalore Division and work towards providing them with the facilities.”
When asked about the immediate requirements for the Bangalore Division, the ADRM said that the provision of ample, safe water to passengers topped the list. “We are keen on having mammoth reverse osmosis plants which can supply upto 200 litres of water per hour. This could cost up to `3 lakh per plant and we will need 3 or 4 such plants at the City station only.”
Increasing the number of toilets across the stations was another priority, she said.
