NAGERCOIL: A locomotive rammed a platform at the Nagercoil Junction railway station on Monday, causing a flutter.
The accident happened when railway employees were shunting the rakes of the Kottayam passenger train to platform number 1A.
After stabling the rakes, they tried to remove the locomotive from the rear end. However, the locomotive moved when it was uncoupled from the rakes. It hit the barricade since 1A was a terminal platform. The barricade and platform were damaged in the accident.
Panicked people ran helter-skelter. No one was injured in the accident. Senior railway officials rushed to the spot, and the locomotive was salvaged.
Railway officials said an inquiry would be conducted to find out the reason for the accident.
This was the fourth accident at Nagercoil Junction in the recent past, said S R Sriram, president of Kanyakumari District Rail User Association. He said lack of adequate manpower and infrastructure was the reason for the frequent accidents.
"There are only a limited number of platforms. Though Rs 7 crore was allotted to improve infrastructure at Nagercoil Junction, nothing has been done constructively," he added.
