CR services hit after coach derails at CST

MUMBAI: The schedule of Central Railway (CR) was badly affected on Sunday after a compartment of a suburban train derailed at CST around 10.50am.

"Two pairs of wheels of the Panvel-CST local went off tracks as the train arrived on platform 2 at CST," an official said.

"Five coaches of the train had already entered CST when the derailment occurred. No passenger was injured in the incident," he added. CR officials immediately blocked platforms 1 and 2 and expedited the process of fixing the snag. "We are conducting a detailed inquiry into what went wrong. We will be taking corrective steps to ensure it does not happen again. Fortunately, it was not a weekday or else thousands of office-goers would have been stranded," said a senior CR official.

Soon after the derailment, CR officials "called off the Sunday mega block" on Harbour and Main lines. "In reality, the workers on tracks were asked to reach CST for the repair work. The mega block wasn't cancelled at all. As a result, scores of commuters were inconvenienced," said a source.

Commuters complained that there were no trains in Nerul and booking clerks were not issuing tickets for Nerul to Mankhurd or CST.

A senior CR official said, "The trains ran according to the mega block schedule. Besides, 10 Up and Down trains on Harbour line were cancelled, disturbing the frequency of services after derailment." Sources said trains on the Main line ran 20 to 25 minutes behind schedule and were crowded.

Several passengers planning to reach CST to catch long-distance trains were badly hit. Stations witnessed huge rush of commuters as trains ran behind schedule.

The fault was rectified around 12.46pm and the tracks for Harbour line were cleared by 1.30 pm, sources said. Many passengers were forced to travel by road to reach Mumbai. However, there was a shortage of taxis and buses ran packed .
