Collision Between Passenger Trains in Uttar Pradesh; 6 Killed, 40 Injured
New Delhi A collision between two passenger trains in Uttar Pradesh has left six people dead and 40 injured. Railways officials warn that the death toll is likely to go up. (See Pics)

The accident took place at about 10:45 pm near the town of Gorakhpur in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, 270 km from the capital of Lucknow.

Officials say the trains collided when one of them was changing tracks; two bogies reportedly derailed.

The injured have been moved to a local hospital, said officials.

"The casualty figure is not yet final," Arunendra Kumar, Chairman of the Railways Board to news agency told ANI.

Movement of trains on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi track has been disrupted following the accident.

The Railways has announced a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to families of those killed in the accident and Rs. 25,000 to those seriously injured.
