Train hits excavator at unmanned level-crossing
A man was killed and another seriously injured when a
train hit an excavator at an unmanned level-crossing (ULC) near
Doddaballapur on Sunday.
The accident occurred at Vaddarahalli gate when the Jabalpur–Yeshwantpur Express (no. 12194) was coming to the city.
The
driver of the excavator, Prakash (30), and its cleaner Naveen Kumar
(28) had sustained severe injuries in the accident and were taken to a
private hospital nearby. Naveen Kumar was declared brought dead by
doctors. Prakash’s condition is said to be stable. The Yeshwantpur
Railway police have registered a case against Prakash.
Sources
said the locomotive of the train was damaged in the accident. The loco
pilot escaped without any injuries. The train continued its journey an
hour later after another locomotive was attached to it.
Railway
officials said that the accident could have been avoided but for
carelessness of the excavator’s driver. Anil Agarwal, Divisional Railway
Manager (DRM), Bangalore, said, “Vehicle drivers must be careful at
ULCs. This was not the case on Sunday, which resulted in the accident.”
This is the first case of an accident at ULC this year in the Bangalore Division.
