Tracks replaced in record time
The engineering branch of Salem Railway Division has
replaced the existing 2.5 km track near Samalpatti Railway Station
between Salem and Jolarpet junctions at a record time of less than four
days.
The total cost was Rs. 5 crore.
Railway
officials said that using the Track Renewal Train machine, purchased at
a cost of Rs. 25 crore in 2007, the existing 20-year-old track was
replaced to take heavier axle load.
Speed
The
machine operates at a rate of 300 meters an hour and replaces the
tracks without compromising on the safety or operation of trains, they
added. It would take a minimum of two months if work was carried out
manually.
The labour cost would have been huge, and
train services would have disrupted. Divisional Railway Manager
Shubhranshu; Senior Divisional Engineer Ma. Vignavelu; Divisional
Engineer P. Nandagopal; inspected the stretch recently.
