TNN | Jun 18, 2014

TRICHY: The high-speed trial run on the newly-laid second line on the Ariyalur - Kallakudi - Palanganatham section coming under the Villupuram - Trichy chord line was conducted on Tuesday by Satish Kumar Mittal, commissioner of railway safety (CRS), southern circle.

The inspection was held along the 25 km stretch where the CRS, along with other railway officials inspected the signals, tracks and electricity cables. Once the second track is cleared for traffic operations the stretch would soon enable trains to run with much ease. The 1,000 crore project was started in 2001 covering a total distance of 290 km between Villipuram and Dindigul, railway officials said.

The Ariyalur - Kallakudi - Palaganatham stretch was taken up for doubling after the completion of the Valladi - Kallakudi stretch, which falls under the Trichy division. After the inspection Mittal said the first level inspection of the tracks was carried out and that several tests will follow in the coming days.

Seven tracks were tested during the audit and all the problems that were identified during the run were rectified by the engineers. The team also carried out a high-speed test in the evening to check the strength of the tracks. The railways has planned to complete all the tests in the next few months following which the CRS is expected his approval for the running of trains.

Earlier, the railway officials had issued a warning message among people residing near this stretch about the trial run to prevent them from crossing the tracks during the inspection.
