Train protection system to be operational in Kolkata Metro

PTI
Train Protection Warning System, a sophisticated accident prevention technology, is expected to be operational in Kolkata Metro by September end.

The system is being installed between Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash section of the Kolkata Metro and the system will be fully operational by September 30, Member (Engineering) Kulbhushan said.
TPWS eliminates the accidents caused by human error like signal passing at danger (SPAD) and overspeeding.
“Siemens has been given the job of installing the TPWS between Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash section and the installation of the system will ensure a fool-proof accident prevention mechanism in the Kolkata Metro,” Kulbhushan said.
The 25 km-long track side work has been completed on the entire section and onboard equipment is being fitted on all available 27 rakes of the Kolkata Metro.
This protection device would automatically apply brakes on a train if it approaches a signal at danger too fast or fails to stop at a signal set at danger. It also automatically applies the brakes if a train is travelling too fast on the approach to certain speed restrictions and buffer stops.
The Kolkata Metro, India’s first underground metro, is with railways and covers almost all the densely populated areas of the city.
The metro covers important areas like Shyambazar, Sovabazar, Girish Park, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Central, Chandni Chowk, Esplanade, Park Street, Rabindra Sadan, Kalighat, New Garia and others.
Besides Kolkata Metro, a pilot TPWS project is going on a trial basis in a 200 km distance on Delh-Agra route and 60 km on Chennai-Gumudipundi route.
