Lumding-Silchar train services resume
GUWAHATI/SILCHAR: After 18 hours, train services on the Lumding-Silchar section resumed at 12 noon on Tuesday.
All trains on the route were cancelled after two engines and a compartment of an empty freight train got derailed between Lower Haflong and Migrendisa stations in Dima Hasao district on Monday evening after suspected miscreants removed fishplates from the tracks. A total of 26 metres of railway tracks was damaged and the miscreants also manhandled two drivers of the train.
The railway men worked overnight to remove the derailed engines and compartment and repaired the tracks. All trains have started plying from Tuesday noon.
Northeast Frontier Railway PRO N Bhattacharjee said, "All long-distance trains leaving for Dibrugarh from Guwahati station and those which are leaving Dibrugarh are running late due to security reasons. Pilot or escort trains are moving in front of long-distance trains in the troubled Karbi Anglong and BTC areas to provide security."
NF Railway authorities said two short-distance passenger trains are likely to be cancelled on Wednesday due to technical reasons.
Reports from Haflong said life in the district was crippled on the second day of the 100-hour bandh on Tuesday. People remained indoors as all shops, markets, schools, government and private offices remained closed.
Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP) and some Dimasa social organizations called the bandh since 5 am on Monday seeking a separate state comprising Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong districts.
The administration has promulgated Section 144 CrPc in the district to thwart any trouble during the 100-hour bandh and also on the eve of Independence Day.
