Decades-old railway quarters occupied by its drivers, guards and Class IV employees in Ludhiana are in a pathetic condition as the Railways has failed to renovate the same.
Most of the quarters have old-fashioned roofs. Kitchens and washrooms in these quarters have no permanent roofs but are simply covered with ordinary cement sheets that have broken many a times.
Residents of the Railway Colony No. 11 said the rainy season was the worst time for residents of railway colonies. “Rainwater accumulates in these houses due to the blockage of sewerage and the leaking roofs further add to our woes,” said a resident.
“My family has been residing in the railway quarters for the past 20 years. We did not receive any funds for the renovation of the same. We have to repair it on our own,” said another resident.
Daljit Singh, Divisional General Secretary, Northern Railway Mazdoor Union, said: “The Railway quarters are in a pathetic condition. Even the rail authorities have not been issuing funds even for whitewashing of these quarters.”
“We have discussed the issue several times with the higher authorities but nothing has been done in this regard. We have also talked with the General Manager of the Northern Railway about the issue during his visit at Ludhiana,” he said.
