Three railway
employees die on duty over past 2 days
MUMBAI: Three railway employees died in separate incidents in the past two days after being hit by trains in Central Railway's Mumbai division.
Kasara resident Ankush Gangaram, who works as a track man on CR's Mumbai division, was run over by the Koyna Express on the tracks between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar around 9.15am on Friday. Source said Gangaram may have failed to spot the train coming.
In another incident on Friday, Akash Meshram, an assistant driver who operates diesel locomotives, was killed when the process of attaching the compartment to the engine was being carried out. Confusion prevails about the exact cause of Meshram's death. According to railway authorities, he may have died after falling off a running train before joining duty. However, railway source said the incident took place on the Up direction fast line in Dadar yard, while Meshram was carrying out the attachment operation.
The third death took place on Thursday when a shunting master at the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) yard was killed during duty. Jagdish Bansidhar Jaiswar (52) was run over by the Nandigram Express. Sources said, "Jaiswar was undertaking a shunting operation for a train that was entering platform No 10. But he was accidentally hit by the Nandigram Express which was also backing off on the adjacent track. He was rushed to St George Hospital but was declared brought dead."
A senior railway official said, "A department inquiry has been initiated to find out the exact cause of the death of these personnel.
