Remittances to NDF
The
Government of India have called for a report from the Indian High
Commissioner in Ceylon on the reported refusal of the Ceylon Government
to permit remittances to the National Defence Fund in India, Mr. Nehru
told the Congress Parliamentary Party’s Standing Committee on External
Affairs. Mr. Nehru said the Government had no information on this other
than newspaper reports and the report of the Indian High Commissioner in
Ceylon was awaited. Some members asked whether Indian support for the
Malaysia move would not offend other South-East Asian countries like
Indonesia. Mr. Nehru said he welcomed the Malaysia proposal mainly
because it would mean two or three countries coming out of colonial
rule.
Manning level-crossings
The
question of manning unmanned level-crossings is still under
consideration by the State Governments. Stating this in the Lok Sabha,
the Union Railway Minister said that so far Madhya Pradesh and
Maharashtra Governments had accepted the principle of sharing the costs
between the Railways and the road authority, and the matter was being
pursued with the other State Governments at a high level. To begin with,
about 1,200 level-crossings have been proposed to be manned. In the
light of periodic surveys of the volume of traffic, more level-crossings
may be added to the list. The Minister said it would not be possible at
this stage to indicate the total outlay on this for the remaining
period of the Plan.
Siruvani waters
Mr.
E.P. Poulose, Minister in charge of Irrigation, told a questioner in
the Kerala Legislative Assembly that the Madras Government had asked for
the supply of water from the Siruvani river to augment the water supply
scheme in Coimbatore town. At present three million gallons were being
given daily from the river for the Coimbatore town water supply scheme.
The water requirements of the town were of the order of 12.5 million
gallons daily, and accordingly the Madras Government had asked for the
supply of more water from the Siruvani river in the Attappadi valley.
