Mumbai: One person died and 15 others were injured, four of them seriously, after two coaches of the Kasara Mumbai local train were hit by the Mumbai-Gondia Vidarbha Express which was travelling in the opposite direction. The accident happened at 9:30 pm on Thursday night.

Just a few minutes before the collision, the Kasara local which was heading to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai had derailed due to a landslide. Due to this, two coaches of the train got dislodged and moved to the adjacent track. Within a few minutes, the oncoming Vidarbha Express hit the coaches, killing three and injuring at least 31 others.

The General Manager of Railways, along with senior officials, rushed to the spot immediately after the accident. Rescue operations were hampered due to rain.

Trains like the Howrah Mail, Kurla-Patna, Kushinagar Express and Dadar-Varanasi were diverted via Vasai road. The Mumbai-Nagpur Duranto Express was halted at the Washind station for over an hour. There was confusion among passengers as no information was given out to them.

According to a statement released by the Central Railways, suburban services to Kasara will remain suspended till 1.30 am on July 21 due to the derailment. Today, suburban services will run upto Asangaon only.

The details of train diversions are available on the website www.cr.indianrailways.gov.in.

Railway Minister Mukul Roy has announced a compensation of
Rs.5 lakh for the deceased; Rs. 1 lakh for the grievously injured and Rs.25,000 for the injured.
