The striking motormen went on a mass sick leave to press for better facilities and security. The motormen had demanded the appointment of assistant motormen so that they do not have to work overtime. Authorities have promised the motormen that their demands will be studied.
The Kasara EMU local train which was heading to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai had derailed due to a landslide. Due to this, two coaches of the train got dislodged and moved to the adjacent track. Within a few minutes, the oncoming Mumbai-Gondia Vidarbha Express hit the coaches, killing three and injuring at least 31 others.
The accident happened at 9:30 pm on Thursday night.  The motorman of Kasara EMU train immediately went for protecting the adjacent track as per existing instructions.  Since EMU’s are worked by single motorman, within the short span of time train from opposite track hit and caused a major accident.
