The inspection of Salem to Karur broad gauge railway line via Namakkal was conducted on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj said that all major works on the 83 km. long stretch had been completed.
“The only major work that is under way is construction of the Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Mallur, while beautification works are to be carried out in some railways stations, she said. The DRM said that earlier the railways had only conducted engine trials on that track and the inspection on Saturday was to check completion of works in the stations and level crossings. “There are a total 14 level crossings from Salem to Karur and works are under way at different levels in all the crossings and are expected to be completed before the end May, she observed.
Ms. Sujatha said that they are coordinating with the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to complete electricity works required for the stations at the earliest. About the accident on the Salem to Namakkal stretch that claimed the lives of two persons during a similar inspection, the DRM said that they were sleeping on the track and were accidentally killed.
