Central Railway, Western Railway will complete 60 yrs today

MUMBAI: Sixty years ago on November 5, Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR)-the two lifelines of Mumbai-came into existence as independent divisions.

CR's chief public relations officer VA Malegaonkar said, "Since 1951, the per passenger earning has increased from Rs 18.64 crore to Rs 3,079.25 crore. The number of our suburban services has increased to 1,573 from 517 in 1950-51."

WR's chief public relations officer Sharat Chandrayan said, "In 1986, WR introduced 12-car services. We also have the distinction of introducing the world's first ladies' special in 1992." -Manthan K Mehta
