Mangalore: Newly crowned union minister for railways and former Karnataka chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda has dismayed the country's citizens after he announced that the railway fares were to be hiked claiming that it was inevitable to raise the fares.


Addressing after arriving in Mangalore on Saturday, Gowda said that it was necessary to raise the fairs of the railway services to attain the development promised by PM Modi.

"The railway sector is a phenomenal department, which has the potential for innovative growth. I have confidence that I will do something worthwhile for the railway sector and also respond to the needs of the district," he said, promising "24x7 development" in the sector. He also promised to bring bullet trains in the country to "make the concept of development synonymous with railways".

Former minister Krishna Palemar, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak, general secretary Kishore Rai, Padmanabha Kottary and others were present.

Earlier, Gowda received a warm welcome by BJP supporters at the Mangalore airport as it was his his first to the city after getting the cabinet post of railways.
