OHE failure

OHE line failure disrupts train traffic

NAGPUR: At least five to six mail/express trains on Mumbai-Nagpur route were delayed after an auto tensioning device (ATD) dropped leading to disturbance of overhead electric (OHE) lines between Dipori and Dhamangaon railway stations early on Thursday morning.

ATD is a critical component of the overhead electric (OHE) lines of the railways and serves both as a termination as well as provides a mechanism for the automatic tensioning of the contact lines.

A section of railway officials say dropping of ATD indicates improper maintenance. However, Nagpur Central Railway public relations officer (PRO) PD Patil denied any technical snag.

Patil said that the OHE lines were damaged when a nilgai, which was crossing the tracks, was run over by a speeding 12151 LTT-Howrah Samrasta Express at 7.55am. The impact was so severe that the nilgai (blue bull) was thrown away on the pole damaging OHE lines.

Does it mean that OHE pole was installed haphazardly? Railway sources say a run over affecting OHE lines looks somewhat absurd. The train engine already has a cattle guard and in case of animal hit, OHE lines are never damaged.

The damaging of OHE lines lead to disruption of normal traffic and the trains were delayed by nearly two to three hours on Mumbai-Howrah route. The affected trains included 12809 Mumbai-Howrah Mail, 18029 LTT-Howrah, 18401 Okha-Puri Express and a couple of more trains.
