Kharge reviews Safety Measures on Trains

New Delhi: After two fire incidents in trains killed 35 passengers, Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has directed audit of each passenger rake and ensuring of best quality fire retardant material to check such mishaps.

The minister, who reviewed safety measures with General Managers of various Zonal Railways, asked officials to take all possible efforts to prevent accidents and improve overall safety environment on railways.

Kharge, referring to the two cases of fire on trains recently, said there should be comprehensive action plan to prevent such unfortunate incidences.

The steps include an audit of each passenger rake, ensuring of best quality of fire retardant material, according to an official statement.

The financial crunch seems to worry the minister who expressed concern over the falling earnings of the national transporter. Kharge asked for “urgent” steps to increase earnings to push railways out of fiscal mess.

Kharge asked the GMs to ensure full and proper attention to the maintenance of Railway assets including the fixed assets and rolling stocks.

To keep officers vigilant, the minister emphasized on meaningful surprise inspections and night inspections and strict actions against those found responsible for lapses.

The minister also stressed on expediting the efforts to complete the various targets set in the railway budget which includes construction of new lines, gauge conversion and doubling.
