Rail modernisation can push up GDP by 3%: Suresh Prabhu
NEW DELHI: Modernisation of Indian Railways that is under way can boost the country's GDP by 2.5-3 per cent over a period of time, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu said today.
"Railways itself in my opinion could contribute to 2.5 per cent to 3 per cent of GDP over a period of time and that will happen," Prabbu said at a function.

When the 39-year-old woman Loco Pilot cranked the nearly 120-tonne diesel locomotive to haul an empty freight train from Vriddhachalam to Ariyalur, it was the first time in Southern Railway history that an “all women crew” headed by her executed the task.

CHENNAI: As he gradually increased the speed of the express train that had just left Ongole station, loco pilot Velmurugan felt a shudder running through him when he saw a young woman jumping in front of his train, dragging a reluctant child with her. 10-yr-old boy stopped train, saved 850 lives
Like any other boy of his age, 10-year-old Siddesh Manjunath would walk to railway tracks near his house every day and wave at passing trains. This habit of the class IV boy from Avaregere village in Davanagere saved the life of around 850 passengers on March 15, this year as he noticed a nearly two-inch crack on the rail and stopped a passenger train by waving his red T-shirt.
